I have spent this weekend revamping one of my most important websites and I wanted to focus this week on why it is so crucial that you not only have your own site  but that you keep it fresh and optimised so it converts for you.

Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘own the racecourse’?

Essentially it means owning your own real estate or property when it comes to business and nowhere is this more important than online.

Why?

Because if you rely on someone else for your online presence, someone like a social media platform for example, then you are at their mercy.

I have seen too many businesses decimated by a change in a Facebook or Instagram algorithm to ever base mine there.

Instead, I use my own site as a central hub.

And you should do the same.

A great site is one that reflects you and your brand so it stands to reason that you start with a great domain name.

Now, aside from using your own name, if it’s available, how do you choose one of those?

Here are some good tips:

Obviously, many of the articles on the web include affiliate links but I’ll spare you those and tell you that my preferred domain name registrar is Namecheap. They have served me reliably for years.

A domain name is all part of your branding and to get that right you need to take a holistic view…

There are some excellent thoughts on that here:

There is also great stuff that is specific to your website here:

I want you to go through those and then make notes on how you intend to brand your site or rebrand it if you have one already.

Next week we’ll move on to the actual mechanics of creating a site that works brilliantly for you in 2020 and way beyond.

For now, your Ted talk is on something that is going to be vital as we get through this time together and emerge into what is already a world that has changed forever…
