Last week we talked about niches and topics and this week we’re going to dive some more into that because I know very well how much of a stumbling block it is for many people.

After all, you can have all the marketing skills in the world but if you have nothing to market then what’s the point?

I also know it’s very hard to make a choice, especially if you are just starting out and terrified you might make the wrong one.

Let me tell you here and now that fear is the one thing that will stop you ever getting started…and if you make a ‘wrong’ choice (IMO there aren’t any, merely ones you might need to recalibrate) then you can simply make another one.

That’s the beauty and the danger of the internet – it’s so immediate and there is such a low barrier to entry that you can kid yourself (or be kidded) that this thing is easy.

It’s not.

Sure, the steps you need to take are not rocket science but you need to learn the right ones to take and to make them solid and, here’s the crucial bit, steps that you keep repeating.

Steps like choosing a topic or niche, setting up a site around it and then consistently pinning to Pinterest or creating YouTube videos and other content or whatever it is you do to send traffic to those sites.

Note that first step…choosing your topic or niche. Some people never move beyond that thanks to good ol’ analysis paralysis. One way to kickstart your way out of that paralysis is to hit upon a strategy that helps you choose and one strategy that works really well for many people is trends.

Now, I am all for trends so long as they have legs, i.e. they will last beyond a few weeks of glory so that all your efforts don’t disappear overnight as that trend nosedives into oblivion.

I’ve also talked about trending marketing methods recently but now we need to apply those to trending products and niches for maximum results.

So today we’re going to look at a whole heap of trends that will last the distance, some more unusual than others, and then look at how others have succeeded with trends across a range of niches.

Let’s kick off with this rather nice round-up of 81 ideas across 36 niches and while he picks out one as evergreen I would contend that many (dog collars anyone?) fit that criteria:

Now, obviously it’s a good idea to choose a trend that you at least understand because otherwise you’re going to have a heck of a time creating content.

Hunting down your own trending products is an excellent way to find one or several that you like or even love and here’s how to do that (this is written with dropshipping in mind but the techniques hold true across the board):

Similarly, this is written with ecommerce in mind but the tips are invaluable for us all:

I promised you success stories and here they are – 50 of the best online shops and key marketing tactics to learn from them:

And to remind you that choosing your niche or topic is only the first step, here are some marketing trends you simply can’t ignore.

Of course, you don’t have to follow all of them and some are accessible only to the biggest budgets but there is plenty here that is excellent food for thought:
