I promised to tell you more about my owl evening and I will as there’s a lesson in it for you.

My daughter’s birthday treat this year was an owl experience at a conservation centre where we not only saw the most wonderful birds but contributed to their upkeep by being there.

The conservation centre is closed to visitors from October to March which means they had to find alternative sources of income to feed the birds.

That’s how they came up with the idea of evenings and experiences which not only bring in that vital extra income but are responsibly and ethically run.

We all need extra at times, especially when we’re trying to start something new. This past weekend I also met a couple who have started their own gin distillery while keeping up their day jobs as a joiner and teacher…

Hard work but they’ve already won several awards, nailed their branding and product and are building a business that will last them a lifetime, if that’s what they want.

I also met an engineer who has turned his passion for blacksmithing a business selling the lamps and other items he makes as well as running workshops teaching others the craft.

That flexibility of approach is key – you need to think laterally in order to do what these people have done. The gin makers invited me along to an open day they’re running next weekend, for example, for which they create an original, one-off bottle of gin.

Think creatively and you’ll be way ahead of the competition, online and off…and yes, all these people had great sites and social media with cohesive branding.

But what about you? What could you start as a side hustle that turns into something bigger (if that’s what you want)?
