Last night I attended a friend’s birthday party and spent some time explaining to not one but two other guests how to get started online. Having run through the basics with one of them, he looked at me and said, ‘Yes, but what is a blog?’

Dumb question?

Not at all. And it brought me up short.

You see, it’s all too easy to assume other people know what you know, especially if you’ve been doing it for some time.

This is why you should never assume you don’t know enough to create a product or become a local business consultant or coach. If you know enough to teach someone else something valuable, then you absolutely can do any of those things.

The man I was talking to has spent his life as a movie camera man. He’s an outdoor kind of guy with a passion for motorbikes and keeping chickens, either of which, as I told him, could represent great niches in which to get started.

But obviously he has to start even further back and that’s with building that blog, something I firmly believe everyone should have in an age of constant social media algorithm changes and the emphasis on storytelling and content marketing.

So this week I am sharing some more great blogging resources, not just for complete beginners but also for those of you who could do with some new tips and tweaks to optimise what you are already doing.

Let’s start with this excellent, comprehensive tutorial on what a new blog needs:
