People love to tell you stuff, don’t they?

Especially if you are new to something.

They like to show off their expertise or knowledge by firmly telling you to do this or that.

Often, as in IM, they will charge you for the privilege.

The problem is that they are often wrong. The stuff they tell you no longer works or never worked or will never worked….

Or if it does work, then they don’t tell you how to do it correctly.

There are so many myths like this that people love to spread over and over again and the reason is, usually, that they don’t know any better themselves.

That’s because they don’t really do this stuff themselves.

So this week I have decided to debunk some of the popular myths that relate to IM at the moment and, in the process, tell you what really works.

First up, Facebook groups. Once upon a time these were a great way to gather a responsive tribe around you. According to Facebook, they’re better than ever. Really?

Find out the truth and suggested alternatives here (I like Slack):

Myth no. 2 – Reddit is a great way to drive traffic. Yes and no. Yes, you can drive traffic to the right kind of offers and sites so long as you understand the Reddit demographic and post the right kind of posts.

Get this wrong and you’re doomed before you start.

It’s all (very well) explained here:

On to our next myth: Ugly sales pages convert better. Hmmm. Read this and then apply it to your next sales page…I promise it will convert better:

Now for one that really makes me see red – you can just push a button a get a site built for you that is full of cash-sucking content which keeps on coming and spitting out the green stuff.

This applies to all those ‘push-button’ auto site building, content generating and spinning software/site-builders you see launched every week.

Here’s why anything like this is a Very Bad Idea and what you should do instead:

Your final myth is one of my pet peeves and that is not just because I love writing: Video beats text when it comes to content. Not necessarily.

It all depends on what your visitors want and their state of mind, among other factors.

Learn all about that here so you can improve your content and sales results with both text and video:

Your TED talk this week busts another myth and one I know many of you will identify with – the myth that you have to be a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young thing to succeed, especially at something new or online.

Not so…find out why here:
